The Digital Future Summit was a key checkpoint in the Digital Strategy refresh programme.

The Digital Strategy version 1.0 was an all-of-government approach to enhancing our Digital Future. Now we need an all-of-New Zealand strategy to take us even further. Digital Strategy version 2.0 will be a Strategy of Action owned by all of New Zealand.

The purpose of the Digital Strategy was to coordinate all the digital initiatives across government properly and provide a catalyst for working partnerships between government, business and our communities, using the power of ICT to enhance all aspects of our lives. It is an action plan to make New Zealand a world leader in using ICT to realise our economic, social, environmental and cultural goals.

The Digital Strategy identifies three key enablers for creating a successful digital future – Connection, Confidence and Content.

Two years on from the launch of the Digital Strategy, it is timely that Version1.0 be reviewed, in order to assess its currency and appropriateness, and refresh the focus for future Digital Strategy-related initiatives. The purpose and three key enablers of the Digital Strategy are still relevant, but just as the technology is changing so too is our thinking about our digital future.

There are five key themes for the Digital Strategy Refresh:

  1. Affordable, fast broadband for all New Zealander’s
  2. ICT driving creativity, innovation, productivity and wealth creation
  3. ICT skills and capability – education and life long learning
  4. NZ Community Content – Strengthening communities and celebrating our uniqueness
  5. Sustainable NZ – ICT supporting a sustainable economy
